Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started
MyRelay is an AI-powered phone relay service. It lets you make outbound phone calls by typing what you want to say — an AI voice speaks your message, and whatever the other person says is transcribed to text on your screen in real time. No human operator is involved. It's designed for people who are Deaf, hard-of-hearing, or have a speech disability.
No app store download needed. Visit my-relay-ai-frontend.vercel.app in your browser. On iPhone, use Safari and tap Share → Add to Home Screen. On Android, Chrome will prompt you to install. It works like a native app — see our full install guide.
Yes. During early access, MyRelay is completely free — no credit card, no trial period, no hidden fees. Every feature is included. We're also pursuing FCC certification so that eligible users can access MyRelay permanently at no cost through federal TRS funding.
No account is required to start making calls. Just open the app, pick a voice, and dial. If you'd like to save preferences or access additional features in the future, an optional account may be available.
Making Calls
Enter a phone number, pick your AI voice, and tap Call. The other person's phone rings — they pick up normally. You type what you want to say, your AI voice speaks it into the call, and whatever they say back is transcribed to text on your screen. It's a full two-way conversation — no operator, no wait time.
Yes — any US phone number. Mobile, landline, business, or toll-free. The person you're calling doesn't need MyRelay or any special equipment. International calling is not yet supported.
Almost instantly. Once you send a message, the AI voice begins speaking within a fraction of a second. The conversation flows naturally in real time.
MyRelay uses Deepgram's nova-2 engine — one of the most accurate speech-to-text systems available. You can expect 95%+ accuracy in typical phone call conditions. Heavy accents, background noise, or poor audio quality can affect results.
The AI voices are natural and human-sounding. Most people on the other end can't tell. There's no relay announcement — the conversation just starts like any normal phone call.
Take your time. The call stays connected while you type. The other person hears a brief pause — just like in any normal conversation. Quick response shortcuts for common phrases are coming soon to help speed things up.
Not yet. MyRelay currently supports outbound calls only. Incoming call support is on our roadmap and will be available in a future update.
Yes. You can choose from 6 voices — Adam, Josh, Sarah, Rachel, Marcus, and Nia — before each call. Switch anytime. See all voices on our voice profiles page.
Privacy & Security
Completely. MyRelay is 100% AI-powered. No human operator hears your conversation. No one listens, no one reads your messages, and no one is on the call besides you and the person you called.
No. MyRelay does not record your calls. Audio is processed in real time for transcription and text-to-speech, then discarded. We don't store audio recordings of your conversations.
Currently, transcripts are not saved after the call ends. Saved transcript functionality is on our roadmap and will store data securely with your privacy as the top priority.
MyRelay is built with a HIPAA-ready architecture, but we have not yet completed formal HIPAA certification. If you're making calls that involve protected health information, please be aware of this. We're working toward full compliance.
TRS & Eligibility
The Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) is a federal program mandated by the ADA that ensures people with hearing or speech disabilities can use the phone. Certified TRS providers offer relay services at no cost to qualifying users. Learn more on our TRS certification page.
If you are Deaf, hard-of-hearing, deafblind, or have a speech disability, you likely qualify for TRS services. This includes conditions like ALS, cerebral palsy, stroke, Parkinson's, stuttering, and many more. Take our eligibility quiz to check.
Not yet. MyRelay is actively pursuing FCC IP Relay certification. In the meantime, the app is fully functional and free to use during early access — no eligibility check required.
For TRS-eligible users — that's the goal. Once FCC-certified, qualifying users would access MyRelay at no cost through the federal TRS program. For non-eligible users, pricing hasn't been finalized, but our mission is to keep the service as accessible as possible.
Technical
MyRelay works on iPhone (iOS 14+, Safari), Android (8+, Chrome), iPad, tablets, and desktop computers (Chrome, Edge, Brave). It's a Progressive Web App — it runs in your browser and can be installed to your home screen.
MyRelay is primarily a text-based interface — you read transcriptions and type responses. If you use hearing aids or cochlear implants and want to hear audio from your phone, standard Bluetooth pairing with your device should work normally since MyRelay runs in your browser.
MyRelay is not designed for emergency calling. If you need to contact 911, please use your phone's native dialer, text 911 directly (where available), or use a certified relay service that supports emergency calls. For more details, see our 911 notice.
MyRelay needs an active internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular data) to make calls. A standard 4G/LTE or Wi-Fi connection works well. The app uses relatively low bandwidth — comparable to a regular voice call.
MyRelay is lightweight. Battery and data usage are comparable to making a standard phone call or using a messaging app. Since it's a PWA, it doesn't take up storage on your device like a traditional app would.
