MyRelay is pursuing FCC IP Relay certification. Here's what that means, where we are, and what it means for you.
The Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) is a federally mandated program that ensures people with hearing or speech disabilities have access to the telephone system. It's been law since the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
The program is overseen by the FCC and funded through an existing federal program. Certified relay providers are reimbursed by this fund, which means eligible users pay nothing for relay services.
Traditional TRS routes calls through human operators. IP Relay does the same thing over the internet. MyRelay is applying as an IP Relay provider — using AI instead of human operators.
TRS is required by the ADA. Phone companies must support it. The FCC enforces it.
The TRS fund covers the cost of certified relay services. Eligible users pay nothing.
Once a provider is certified, eligible users access the service at no personal cost.
